HOW TO LOCATE A VEHICLE VIN?

    • Look for your car's VIN at the front of the dashboard, on the driver's side of the vehicle. It's easiest to see your VIN from outside the car, looking in through the windshield, at the area where the hood ends and the windshield begins.
    • Or, look for the VIN on the post of the driver's side door. You'll see this when you open the door and look around the area where the door latches to the car.

If you can't find the VIN on the car, it should be printed on your insurance cards and your vehicle's title.

HOW TO LOCATE VIN ON A MOTORCYCLE?

    • On the frame: Look for a metal plate or engraved numbers on the motorcycle frame, typically near the steering head.
    • Fork/Steering neck: The VIN can often be found on a metal plate attached to the fork or steering neck area, visible when turning the handlebars.
    • Under the seat: Check under the motorcycle seat; sometimes, the VIN is located on a sticker or a metal plate in this area.
    • On the engine: Some motorcycles may have the VIN stamped or engraved directly onto the engine casing.
    • WHAT INFO DOES A VIN CONTAIN?

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a 17-digit code, comprising capital letters and numbers, that uniquely identifies a vehicle. Each letter and number provides information about your vehicle including :

      • year
      • make
      • model
      • engine size
      • manufacturer
    • WHAT DOES EACH DIGIT IN A VIN MEAN?

      World Manufacturer Identifier

The first three digits of a vehicle’s VIN make up the World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI).

      • The 1st digit defines the country of origin or the final point of assembly of your vehicle.
      • The 2nd digit indicates the manufacturer and the region where your vehicle was produced.
      • The 3rd digit, when coupled with the first two digits, indicates your vehicle’s type or manufacturing division.

    • VEHICLE DESCRIPTION SECTION

Digits in positions 4 through 9 make up the Vehicle Description Section (VDS).

      • 4th through 8th digits describe your vehicle’s model, body type, restraint system, transmission type, and engine code.
      • The 9th digit is the check digit, which is used to detect fraudulent VINs. The number that appears in the ninth position varies and is based on a mathematical formula developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

      VEHICLE IDENTIFIER SECTION

Digits in positions 10 through 17 make up the Vehicle Identifier Section (VIS).

      • The 10th digit indicates the year, which only applies to vehicles built in or after 1981 since the VIN format was not standardized until that year.
